TV Network UPN Drops Utah Station That Objected To Black Shows - United Paramount Network cancels contract with station KJZZ in Salt Lake City - Brief Article UPN has switched to another Utah affiliate station after KJZZ in Salt Lake City complained about the network's "urban/ethnic programming."
KJZZ's complaint was one factor in UPN's recent decision to move its affiliation to another Utah station, KAZG in Ogden, as of Jan. 16.
KJZZ wrote the network with eight demands. The last, which UPN made public, read: "KJZZ will have the option, with 90-day written notice to cancel this contract should UPN increase the urban/ethnic programming above the current two (2) hours per week."
The request from the Salt Lake station concerned UPN's Monday night lineup which features sitcoms with Black casts: "Moesha," "The Parkers," "The Hughleys" and "Girlfriends."
UPN Chief Operating Officer Adam Ware called the request "outrageous and offensive. No one else has proposed limiting shows based on ethnicity."
KJZZ General Manager Randy Rigby said the station was responding to poor ratings in Utah, which is less than one percent Black.
UPN said negotiations broke down over other questions concerning the amount the network should pay the affiliate to carry its program, and delays in network programming to make way for the Utah Jazz basketball games.
