NEW SHOWS

Cambridge Spies--True stow of four British spies betraying their country during the Cold War. Features gay characters Guy Burgess (Tom Hollander) and Anthony Blunt (Samuel West). (BBC America, Saturdays, 10 P.M. Eastern Time, 7 P.M. and 11 P.M. Pacific Time; premieres October 25)

Carnivale--A fugitive youth (In the Bedroom's Nick Stahl) with supernatural talents joins a strange carnival in the Depression-era Dust Bowl. Gay actor John Fleck plays Gecko, the lizard man. (HBO, Sundays 9 P.M. Eastern; premieres September 14, 9:30 P.M. Eastern)

The Ellen DeGeneres Show--Yep, she's back with a talk-variety show. (Syndicated, mostly on NBC stations, weekdays, times vary; premieres September 8)

It's All Rlative--A Harvard student becomes engaged to a bartender. The twist? She has two sophisticated Beacon Hill gay dads (John Benjamin Hickey and Chris Sieber), and his parents (Lenny Clarke and Harriet Harris) are blue-collar Irish Catholics who don't like queers, in this new sitcom from out uber-producers Craig Zadan and Neil Meron. (ABC, Wednesdays, 8:30 P.M. Eastern; premieres October 1)

The Joe Schmo Show--An average guy who believes he's on a reality show is actually surrounded by actors playing reality roles. Among them is "The Gay Guy," Kip (Lance Krall). (Spike TV, Sundays, 9 P.M. Eastern; premieres Sunday, September 7)

A Minute With Stan Hooper--Norm Macdonald moves to Wisconsin with his wife to escape the insanity of Manhattan. A gay couple (Garret Dillahunt and Daniel Roebuck) own the local diner. (Fox, Wednesdays 8:30 P.M. Eastern; premieres October 29)

Mix it Up--A home makeover show where stylistically different couples and housemates learn to blend their lives; episodes featuring a lesbian couple and a gay couple are in the can. Co-executive-produced by Courteney Cox and David Arquette. (WE Women's Entertainment, Wednesdays, 8 P.M. Eastern; premieres October 22)

Short Screamers With Clive Baker--The acclaimed gay author and director hosts a collection of short horror films during AMC's MonsterFest. (AMC, interspersed throughout festival, October 26-31, plus a half-hour special on Halloween, 10 P.M. Eastern)

Two and a Half Men--Charlie Harper's (Charlie Sheen) bachelor life is invaded when uptight brother Alan (Jon Cryer) and Alan's 10-year-old son move in. Alan's estranged wife, Judith (Marin Hinkle), is bisexual. (CBS, Mondays, 9:30 P.M. Eastern; premieres September 22)

Movies and Miniseries

Angels in America--Al Pacino, Meryl Streep, Justin Kirk, and Emma Thompson lead a stellar east in this adaptation of Tony Kushner's Pulitzer-winning play. (HBO, December)

Jackie Collins' Hollywood Wives: The New Generation--This time a gay man is one of the wives. Cast includes Farrall Fawcett, Melissa Gilbert, and Robyn Givens. (CBS, October 19, 9 P.M. Eastern)

Midseason

Wonderfalls--Inanimate animal figurines talk to Jaye Tyler (Caroline Dhavernas), motivating her to help people, including her overachieving lesbian sister (Noises Off Tony win net Katie Finneran). Out creators Bryan Fuller (Dead Like Me) and Todd Holland (Malcolm in the Middle) are the idea men behind this eccentric dramedy. (Fox, tentatively January 2004)

The L Word--It's the eagerly awaited Queer as Folk for lesbians, set in West Hollywood. The show's stellar cast includes Jennifer Beals, Leisha Hailey, Laurel Holloman, and Pam Grier. (Showtime, January 2004)

Returning shows

Boomtown--Rebecca De Mornay will guest-star in two episodes as a lesbian jewel thief, including one with sexy Kelly Hu. (NBC, Fridays, 10 P.M. Eastern; premieres September 26)

ER--Laura Innes returns as lesbian doctor Kerry Weaver. More gay plots are rumored. (NBC, Thursdays 10 P.M. Eastern; premieres September 25)

Will & Grace--Fans are curious to see if Will and Jack (Eric McCormack and Sean Hayes) actually humped in the season finale. (NBC, Thursdays, 8:30 P.M. Eastern; premieres September 25 at 9 P.M. Eastern)

Queer as Folk--More wild escapades from those Pittsburgh boys in their fourth season. (Showtime, spring)

Six Feet Under--David and Keith will be trying to make it work again. (HBO, tentatively January)

Commercials still are as annoying, misleading, insulting and mind-degrading as ever. Complain all we want, they're still here, slapping us upside the head two scores or more an hour.
