Toshiba Plasma Tv
Liquid crystal and plasma - Widescreen TV KEEPING VALUE IN THE MARKET ARE TWO MAIN FACTORS--STYLE AND TECHNOLOGY. MANUFACTURERS ARE CONSTANTLY ATTEMPTING TO IMPROVE PICTURE QUALITY IN CRT TELEVISIONS, WITH THE MOST RECENT STAB BEING PHILIPS'S AWARD WINNING PIXEL PLUS TECHNOLOGY.
Meanwhile, Sony has upped the stakes on the design side in launching a range of plasma televisions made to appear as though they are floating in the air.
Toshiba's Mr Heape, meanwhile, believes that the future of high specification widescreen TV will be a merging of design and technology, centred around the flat panel technologies.
"Over the next few years we'll see more and more flat screen technologies coming onto the market. There has been a lot of talk about LCD and plasma, both of which are showing significant growth, albeit off a small base. This will be driven further by more manufacturers entering the market.
"I believe the real growth opportunity in the market is plasma television. As we have witnessed with the success of Dolby Digital TVs, the average consumer doesn't want the hassle of separates--they want a simple integrated solution. Consumers who aspire to the must have image of plasma panels will prefer to buy a plasma TV so as not to worry about cabling and connecting to a TV tuner."
Alan Joannidi, product manager at Sharp, on the other hand is looking to take advantage of the fact that the digital terrestrial situation has now settled down, and offers more than ever in terms of free-to-view channels.
"The expansion of on-board digital tuners is the main area of growth for widescreen CRT in the next 12 months, and we aim to be in this market soon. Ultimately Sharp sees LCD technology as the future of TV and is concentrating on further developing what is already the UK's widest range of LCD TVs including two widescreen models."
JVC will also be continuing to introduce new technologies, including plasma, LCD and rear projection. In addition to this the company will be adding new features in its standard TVs such as digital features, picture enhancement, wireless technology and enhanced sound, and intimating that many of its sets will be ready for the digital era.
Philips's Mr Knight, promises that the Dutch company will be spreading its technological tentacles further through its product range, with Pixel Plus set to crop up further down the range, as well as on its plasma sets.
"As this technology becomes more affordable," he says, "further features will be introduced to differentiate individual products in an ever growing range."
