Summer 2005 Tv Shows
2005 AdCarley Petesch Dance on film is sprouting up everywhere. Dancers and choreographers looking for a creative outlet are teaming up with video and filmmakers. In some cases, inspired by what they see at festivals, they've grabbed a camera themselves to try something new.
Dance on Camera's 33rd Annual Festival, NYC January 7-8, 14-15, 21-22, 2005 www.dancefilmsassn.org
This year the festival has culled about 50 films from 250 entries from 20 countries--more than ever before. Founded by the Dance Films Association in 1971, it shows experimental films, fantasy films, and documentaries.
The main showings are at the Walter Reade Theater (co-sponsored by the Film Society of Lincoln Center). Screenings, panel discussions, and workshops will be held in the gallery of Dance Theater Workshop, the New York Public Library (both the Donnell Media Center and the Grand Army Branch in Brooklyn), and the Puffin Room in SoHo.
You can also view selections from the festival at Dance on Camera's Touring Partner Sites: Glenridge Performing Arts Center in Sarasota, FL; Jacob Burns Center in Pleasantville, NY; Museum of Fine Arts in Boston, MA; University of Michigan in Ann Arbor, MI; Citydance in Washington, DC; The Yard in Martha's Vineyard, MA; Wesleyan University in Middletown, CT; Belcourte Theatre in Nashville, TN; Virginia Commonwealth University in Richmond, VA; Ohio State University's Department of Dance in Columbus, OH; Florida State University in Tallahassee, FL; Cinema K. Dance Camera West Summer Festival, Los Angeles June 2005 www.dancecamerawest.org
A young shoot of a festival, Dance Camera West celebrates not only dance films, but also innovative ways of viewing them. In addition to screenings, installations, symposiums, and workshops at the Ford Amphitheatre, REDCAT Theatre, The Getty Center, and the UCLA Hammer Museum, films may be projected onto six-inch monitors, brick walls, or urban forests. According to co-director Kelly Hargrave, DCW attracts dancers as well as people "who would be afraid of dance and are comfortable with film."
