ABC Television Network's new reality game show titled "My Kind of Town" will hold tryouts from 4 to 9 p.m., seeking between 200 and 250 Burlington-area residents those chosen must work, reside or attend school in the 53105 ZIP code for a casting call.
The tryouts will be held at Burlington High School, 400 McCanna Parkway. People of all ages are welcome, but those who are selected for the show must be 18 and a U.S. resident.
Casting also is being held in Mount Horeb from 1:30 to 6:30 p.m. today and 4 to 9 p.m. Monday at the Mount Horeb Public Library.
The one-hour variety/comedy hybrid show will highlight small- town America each week, offering contestants the chance to become the stars of their own show.
"If there is someone who plays the ukulele or stands on his hands while whistling a tune, then come on out," said Caryn Posnansky, casting director for "My Kind Of Town."
"It's a show about your neighbors, your waitress, your banker, and that's what will make it exciting for the audience and the people watching it at home, as well," Posnansky said. "It's about the people with that small-town feel."
Each week, 200 people from one small town will travel to the New York City studio, where a handful will participate in individualized comedic games and gags for prizes tailored to their own lives.
One person from the group of 200 will be chosen to shoulder the burden of either winning or losing a prize for the other 199 audience members all of whom they will see on a regular basis.
With a studio audience consisting of only your fellow neighbors, "My Kind of Town" will borrow from the likes of the "The Ed Sullivan Show" and "The Price Is Right," Burlington City Administrator David Torgler said.
"I can see this not only a being a fun thing for residents to do, but also letting the nation know what Burlington, Wisconsin, is all about," Torgler said. "I think it could be a great marketing tool for ChocolateFest."
It was Burlington's annual ChocolateFest that prompted ABC producers to seek out Burlington as a site for contestants in the first place, Torgler said.
The initial order is six episodes, with production scheduled to begin in mid-July in New York City.
"It's a great, exciting opportunity for local residents," said Tracy Short, president-elect of the Burlington Area Chamber of Commerce. "I think it's a novel, unique opportunity that would also give exposure to the community."
ABC officials said the show would have atmosphere and energy, emotional wish fulfillment, unexpected twists, laugh-out-loud comedy and the occasional celebrity.
"It's a show that's full of comedic surprises" said Andrea Wong from ABC.
