DisplaySearch Indicates Desktop Monitor Shipments Fall in Q1'03; LCD Monitors Reach a 37% Share

Business Editors/High-Tech Writers

AUSTIN, Texas--(BUSINESS WIRE)--June 26, 2003

DisplaySearch, the worldwide leader in FPD market research and consulting, revealed in its latest Quarterly Desktop Monitor Shipment and Forecast Report that desktop monitor shipments fell 12% sequentially (Q/Q) and 1% year-over-year (Y/Y) in Q1'03 to 28.6 million units. All regions declined sequentially with only Europe and rest of world (ROW) growing on a Y/Y basis. By supplier, Samsung was the top desktop monitor supplier with a slight 13.5% to 13.4% advantage over Dell with both suppliers gaining share from 12.9% and 12.1% respectively in Q4'02. HP remained #3 in total desktop monitor shipments with its share rising from 7.2% to 8.5%. By technology:

-- LCD monitors, which exclude LCD PCs, rose twice as fast as

projected in Q1'03 at 8% Q/Q growth vs. the suppliers'

aggregate 4% forecast. Shipments were 441K units larger than

expected, reaching a new record high of 10.6 million units and

a 37% share, up from 30% last quarter. Both stand-alone and

bundled shipments exceeded expectations with stand-alone

shipments growing more than twice as fast as bundled. Europe

was the fastest growing market up 19% with North America down

3%. As a result, Europe overtook North America to become the

largest market for LCD monitors. With Europe showing the

lowest bundled penetration of any region, Europe's growth

helped fuel the significant increase in stand-alone LCD

monitors. By size, 15" shipments fell 5%, while 17" SXGA

shipments rose 41%. The growth at 17" was driven by Europe

whose 17" shipments rose 54% Q/Q. Starting with this issue, a

number of new features have been added to the LCD monitor

chapters including shipments of LCD monitors with a video

input by region and supplier, with TV tuners by region and

supplier and with portrait mode by region and supplier. It

also segments the 20"+ market into seven different categories.

In terms of worldwide LCD monitor shipments by supplier as indicated in Table 1:

-- Despite weakness in North America, Dell continued to gain

share with shipments rising 18% Q/Q and 182% Y/Y boosting

its share from 14.7% to 16.0%. Its shipments exceeded

Japan's entire LCD monitor demand. Its regional growth was

led by ROW and Europe, at over 30% each, but Dell remained

highly dependent on North America at over 60% of

shipments. Dell remained #1 in North America, rose from #2

to #1 in Europe and fell from #5 to #6 in Japan, and #6 to

#7 in ROW. Dell remained #1 at every size it participates

in, except for 19" SXGA, where it fell behind Samsung. Its

growth was highest at 18" SXGA. Dell was the top bundled

supplier and #11 stand-alone supplier and is expected to

improve its stand-alone ranking to #7 in Q2'03.

-- Samsung remained #2 worldwide in Q1'03 on flat results,

causing its share to fall from 9.6% to 8.9%. It enjoyed

significant growth in Japan, but remained most dependent

on Europe. It fell from #1 to #2 in Europe and remained #1

in ROW, #6 in North America and #12 in Japan. In terms of

rankings by size, Samsung fell from #2 to #3 at 15",

surpassed by HP, remained #2 at 17" SXGA, rose to #1 at

19" SXGA, was #3 at 17" XGA Wide and #3 at 21"+. It was

the #1 stand-alone supplier and also led in LCD monitor

shipments with a video input and with an integrated TV

tuner.

-- HP regained the #3 position it held in Q2'02 on 62% Q/Q

and 63% Y/Y growth, boosting its share from 5.0% to 7.5%.

It enjoyed impressive growth in all regions with Europe

seeing the fastest growth. By region, HP rose from #5 to

#2 in North America, jumped from #7 to #3 in Europe,

reached #10 in ROW and #15 in Japan. HP also enjoyed

impressive growth at all sizes. It rose from #3 to #2 at

15" XGA, jumped from #5 to #3 at 17" SXGA, rose from #11

to #4 at 18" SXGA and climbed from #8 to #5 at 20.1" UXGA.
