The Royal Bank of Scotland increased its ad spending by 3,700 percent between 2000 and 2003, Wachovia by 2,400 percent and Bank One by 765 percent, according to a recent study by The Journal of Financial Advertising & Marketing. "Retail bank advertising is exploding, in large part as a response to consolidation," says Bill Wreaks, publisher and chief analyst. "Some real sleepers are suddenly coming to the forefront in ad spending growth." It's safe to say that many bankers are sleeping at the wheel when it comes to marketing, content to run rate ads and do little more to promote their brands and business.
