47 Indonesia prisoners flee while guards watch World Cup on TV JAKARTA, June 19 Kyodo
Forty-seven prisoners escaped from a prison in Pekanbaru in central Sumatra while prison guards were watching a live TV show of the World Cup match between Brazil and Belgium in Japan on Monday, Indonesian press reports say.
In a report Tuesday, the evening daily Suara Pembaruan said the prisoners launched an assault on the 12 prison guards who were watching the soccer match and fled from the front gate of the prison.
Indonesian police caught 15 prisoners by Tuesday morning but 32 remained at large.
Like most countries in Asia, Indonesians are enthusiastic soccer fans, and virtually all World Cup matches, which are taking place in Japan and South Korea, have been broadcast live on TV.
