Live TV news feed for Irish 02 GPRS users - News - Ireland Live Television News offering General Packet Radio Service - Brief ArticleDavid Roe IRELAND Live Television News has launched a live colour television news broadcast feed to mobile phones globally over O2's General Packet Radio Service (GPRS) mobile network.
The service, which will be available on all new XDA handheld devices from O2, is the first news service of its kind in the world.
Ireland Live Television News, owned by the Anner Media Group and aimed at the global market, was officially launched last February and is currently rolling out its broadband service across the US.
"Television is going mobile," Mr Andy Ruane, chief executive of Ireland Live Television said.
"With broadband, television has gone global and now its going mobile. This is mobile digital television."
The station has a potential market of 70 million people of Irish origin worldwide.
The company's other streaming offerings, a comedy channel and live broadcasts from the Dail [the Irish Parliament], are also available over GPRS.
XDA handsets have only just been launched in Ireland. They combine a PDA running in Microsoft's Pocket PC operating system, with a mobile phone and can operate on both GSM and GPRS networks.
