Online Extra: A Quantum Leap for 'Reality' TV By Simon Applebaum
A cable network focused on quantum physics would have little chance of success, but, then again, what the #$*! do we know?
In his quest to launch Quantum TV: The Science and Spirit Network, William Arntz can offer cable operators this impressive bit of empirical data: What the #$*! Do We Know!? (otherwise known as What the Bleep Do We Know!?), an independent movie he made about "quantum uncertainty," has grossed over $10 million since its release last year. The film--part documentary, part cartoon and part dramatized search for spiritual uplift--stars Marlee Matlin as a wedding photographer who uses meditation to conquer depression and transform her life and her perception of reality.
Arntz, who hopes to launch the network in 2006, acknowledges that metaphysical science won't be an easy sell when it comes time to approach operators, but he's hoping that the March 15 DVD release of What the and its eventual premiere on Starz--and word of mouth--will build momentum for Quantum TV, through which he intends to show how advanced science and spirituality are, or can be, part of our everyday lives. The network would mix various formats, including comedy, animation and profiles of religious and cultural figures.
"We've reached the point where people, having been through so many sitcoms and reality shows and so on, want content that intrigues their minds and [gives them] a new outlook on life," Arntz says. "You can do that in an entertaining way."
