Daily Record Tv Listings Scotland
Hark The Herald's new weekend lookSteve Wilson THIS weekend saw the biggest shake-up in the weekend quality newspaper market since the launch of the Sunday Herald two years ago.
Our sister paper, The Herald introduced a series of changes yesterday, including a redesigned magazine, a new Weekend Living section, and a new design for its sports section.
The changes are the first major transformation since Mark Douglas- Home became editor last summer. The magazine is printed on better paper and will have a staff of seven. Food, Homes, Outdoors and Gardening have been hived off into the new Weekend Living section. The designers hired to mastermind the changes were Ally Palmer and Terry Watson.
This week will bring further changes, with a Monday families page, featuring dilemmas and advice, a Thursday mind and bodies page which includes a philosophy section, and a Girl Talk page on Friday, addressing women's issues. The arts pages will have a daily billboard section for news. In two weeks the paper will carry daily cinema listings.
Douglas-Home said: "The front part of the paper is still pretty much the Herald and we are bringing in the changes at the back. The Herald's readership is pretty loyal - it minds hugely what happens to the paper - so we are trying to modernise slowly. Gradually we will bring more of these elements through into the paper."
He believes the paper has room to grow on a Saturday. It's average weekend sale is just under 84,000, while the week day editions average a circulation of 97,000.
"Other papers manage to record very good sales on a Saturday and that is what we are trying to do. We want to keep readers with us six days a week."
Scotland on Sunday, meanwhile, replaced its Seven TV listings and culture magazine with a new tabloid section, eg (essential guide) edited by socialite Kelly Cooper Barr. eg is the latest in a series of changes introduced by SoS editor Margot Wilson, who took on the role at the end of last year, and the revamp was backed by a promotional push with TV ads on Channel 4 and Scottish, and promotions.
The new section was designed design agency ISO under the watchful eye of Magazine director Sandra Colamartino, who previously edited the Scotsman's Saturday magazine, Wilson has tempted Gavin Munro back from Canada, where he was working as a designer on the National Post, to revamp the paper's comment and analysis section. It's hardly surprising that the new type-fount and layout bears a distinct resemblance to the Canadian paper.
The Sunday market has been particularly competitive in recent weeks, with sales promotions at the Sunday Herald boosting circulation to over 62,000. Last weekend, The Sunday Times overtook SoS for the first time when its annual Rich List boosted circulation to 86,000, a whisker off its rival's Scottish sale of 85,778.
