Daytek displays Daewoo - VAR Bits MARKHAM, Ont. -- Sam Chiu, general manager of Daytek Electronics Corp., wears two hats nowadays: the one from Daytek and another one from Daewoo International.
Daytek has been producing monitor/display units, predominantly for the low-end for the North American market since 1993.
"So far Daytek has done quite well at the low to midlevel, but we want to further climb up the channel to the upper level," Chiu said.
Chiu has brought in high-end display units from Daewoo International.
To accomplish that, Chiu wants to market Daytek/Daewoo displays similar to the Toyota/Lexus in the automobile marketplace.
To help Daytek, he has inked an exclusive distribution deal with Ingram Micro Canada of Mississauga, Ont.
Ingram Canada will handle all of the Canadian distribution, selling and logistics, while Daytek will take care of marketing and help Ingram with technical support.
Chiu says that Ingram can promote the new line of Daewoo displays to between 3,000 to 4,000 resellers.
The new Daewoo line will comprise traditional desktop displays between 15 inches and 21 inches, an LCD flat-panel line up between 15 inches and 22 inches, and top-end Plasma presentation units between 39 inches to 60 inches in the near future.
For the presentation units, a 42-inch plasma monitor sells for $8,999 and is being targeted at airports, shopping malls and kiosks.
Chiu envisions a day when these plasma monitors with TV tuners will also be sold in the entertainment market.
Margins on the Daewoo line will be 15 to 20 per cent for smaller sized units, 20 to 25 per cent for LCD units with even a higher percentage for the plasma displays.
