American Life Tv
The organizing principle of American public life in the 21st century will apparently be that everything tends to a TV "reality show." * The organizing principle of American public life in the 21st century will apparently be that everything tends to a TV "reality show." Corporate America has led the way, with real-estate magnate Donald Trump currently the star of NBC's hit The Apprentice. Now the political sphere has caught the infection, with sometime Democratic presidential hopeful Al Sharpton signing up with Spike TV to host a show titled I Hate My Job. The idea is that Sharpton and a "life counselor" will try to help people get out of jobs they are unhappy with and into ones to which they are ideally suited. Now, it is easy to smile at Sharpton, who has a nice line in quips. It is not so easy to forget the corpses and wrecked lives his public career has left in its wake: at the Crown Heights pogrom, the Tawana Brawley hoax, the Freddy's Fashion Mart massacre. It is a sorry comment on our times that this odious buffoon should be able to acquire celebrity status. The only silver lining here is that his new line of work will presumably offer Sharpton few opportunities for defamation, Jew-baiting, and so on.
