Monochrome prints remain a favored medium for many PSA printers. Purists have scoffed at black & white photographs that were not printed on archival fiber-based paper, having nothing to do with less expensive resin-coated papers of today. Now that we are in the digital age, these folks question the performance of digital cameras. They don't believe a digital monochrome print can compare to one produced from a negative after spending hours in a traditional darkroom. The author states that as photography is both a science and an art, the equipment and paper used do not make an image art, any more than brushes, paint, and canvas make a painting art. He shows in Professional Techniques for Black & White Digital Photography that digital black & white prints rival those made in a more traditional manner. Rice gives you an understanding of how you can produce digital black & white photographs that rival those made by the finest film photographers and printmakers.
The author covers camera basics, conceptualizing the image, exposure and lighting, white balance, and color temperature. He explains composition and the principles of effective composition and common problems in composition.
Principles of how best to convert your color image to black and white are explained in order for you to maximize the advantages of digital. He dedicates a chapter to digital infrared, including the popular camera models for taking infrared photographs.
Patrick Rice, who lives in Olmsted, OH, is a professional photographer for more than twenty-six years.
